Cliques & Fraternities In The Church

One of the great stumbling blocks to the gospel and road blocks to revival is the party spirit that exists among many of God’s people. This is more than human nature. This is the devil’s nature – always to divide, to splinter, and to break up. This week I was preaching through the works of the flesh in Galatians 5 and the Holy Spirit dealt with me about this truth. How easy it is to identify another man’s flesh and how difficult it is to see mine! The most deceptive flesh is always my own. It hides. It excuses. It justifies. It parades in religious terms. But it is still flesh. We love to preach against “adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,…

Our October 2018 Itinerary

October is a busy month for special meetings in local churches. I hope you will be actively engaged in any special meetings in your own local church! There is nothing more encouraging than to see faithful people working together, praying together, and coming together to hear the Word of God. As you pray for the meetings where you are we would be very grateful if you would pray for us. A verse that has come to mean a great deal to me recently is 2 Corinthians 2:14. I am praying it and claiming it day by day: Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us…

Armed For Battle

Main Slide Sharing Your Faith

The second Amendment of the United States Constitution states the right of American citizens “to keep and bear arms.” In 1791 our forefathers saw the need for people to defend their own liberties against tyranny. From the beginning of our nation an armed citizenry was connected to freedom. The goal was not death but preserving a way of life. What a vivid illustration of the spiritual warfare that believers are engaged in. The greatest tyrant of all, the devil, seeks to bring men into bondage and keep them there. Only the truth will set them free. And only those armed with the truth can help them. The gospel brings life. This is the picture given to us in Ephesians 6.…

Are You Seeking God’s Direction For Some Decision?

At every stage on the journey we face crossroads – choices that will have long-lasting effects on both ourselves and others. Direction determines destination. There is never a day that we do not need God’s wisdom and never a season of life that we can afford to make decisions on our own. Week after week I meet people in every place where I travel who are trying to find the Lord’s will. What should I do? Who should I marry? Where should I go to college? How should I deal with this problem? When will the time be right to make a move? Perhaps the greater question, the question that helps to answer all of the others, is: How do…

New Gospel Tract Now Available!

Several people have asked in recent weeks if I am working toward publishing any books. The answer is yes and the key word is “working”! My pastor wisely advised me not to publish much too early and to begin with smaller projects. I have tried to do that through writing weekly articles over the last seven years. One of my desires was to publish something related to the gospel before publishing other works. The message of Christ is the greatest message on earth! In the words of a divinely inspired evangelist and writer, “it is the power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16). I have just completed a brand new gospel tract that we are praying will be used of…

The God Of The Thunder

You would have laughed at me. In fact, I laughed at myself. I was sitting on our front porch studying what the Bible has to say about thunder. Suddenly the largest crack of thunder I have ever heard in my life sounded right next to me! Before I was even conscious of what I was doing, I had dropped everything and was standing with both hands in the air looking around. It got my attention to say the least. We have had an inordinate amount of strong thunderstorms this year. They can be frightening and impressive at the same time. But there is more…they make us think about God. Scripture speaks frequently of thunder. There is a theology to thunder.…

A Special Announcement From Scott Pauley

When the Lord led me into evangelistic work one of the great desires of my heart was to help provide resources that would encourage and equip others to give the gospel. My prayer in each meeting is that God will give both new believers and new witnesses who will continue after we are gone. Only He can set things in motion that will last into eternity. The first resource that I had the joy of being a part of was a special GO Kit designed to train others in the matter of personal witnessing. It has been a joy to hear from many churches who are using this one month Bible study to place an emphasis on sharing the gospel. We…

What I Do When I Don’t Feel Like Praying

People imagine that preachers jump out of bed every day with a strong urge to pray. Nothing could be further from the truth! We all battle flesh and flesh doesn’t like spiritual work. There are times when I just don’t feel like praying. It is then that I most need to pray. Prayer is not a discipline of feelings – it is a discipline of faith. Begin with praise instead of prayer. If I begin naming the blessings of God and blessing Him my heart begins to warm toward the Lord. Meditating on His goodness increases my faith to ask for more. Get outside. There is something sweet about sitting or walking in the world that God created. This helps…

Preacher, Are You Growing?

As preachers of God’s truth we must always be growing. Certainly we must continue to mature in our understanding of the truth itself, but we must also develop in our delivery of it. God’s Word is perfect – we are not. The message cannot be improved, but the messenger can! Young preachers are challenged to work on themselves. Too often, older preachers stop working. We grow complacent and comfortable. We accept our weaknesses and settle into our ruts. Sometimes with the increased frequency of speaking we develop bad habits. (Thank God for wives who remind us of this!) Simple things will help us all. Go through a book on preaching. Read a sermon regularly. Listen to effective preachers. As painful…

A Brief Report On The Preacher’s Rest

Many of you have prayed for us this week as we conducted The Preacher’s Rest in Hickory, NC. The Tabernacle Baptist Church family worked hard to host friends from many places. They demonstrated the love and grace of God in a special way. Nearly one hundred fellow laborers – preachers and their wives – joined us for this first gathering. Most of all, the presence of the Lord was very evident. Our heart for this meeting was one thing: to minister to the inner man. Healthy ministries grow out of healthy souls. Every preacher who desires to learn more fully the Lord’s work must learn more deeply the Lord’s rest. What Is This Rest? It was a joy to study…
