Enjoying the Journey

There is no book on earth like God’s Book – it is the very Word of the Living God, and every word of it is for us! I love the Bible. This library of 66 books has changed and continues to change my life. We should never allow our reading of good books to substitute for the reading of Scripture. In my study of God’s Word I have come to appreciate a number of helpful resources that deal with the divine revelation, inspiration, preservation, translation, and illumination of Scripture. In uncertain times believers should be certain about the Bible. I recommend these books to you with the hope that they will help to strengthen your own conviction and love for…

Leadership has become a buzzword in our culture. Without a doubt there can be an unhealthy, man-centered, humanistic emphasis on leadership. Yet a careful student of history must admit that God leads men to lead others and, at critical times in civilization, He raises up leaders to make a difference in the world. Dr. Lee Roberson was famous for saying, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” Each of us could tell the story of different leaders who made a contribution to our heritage or personally influenced our lives. Here are a handful of leaders who I have enjoyed reading about and learning from… William Wilberforce – A Hero for Humanity by Kevin Belmonte (Wilberforce was used of God to bring…

Last night I preached in a tent meeting on “It’s Prayer Time In America.” Yes, these are turbulent times, political times, chaotic times, dark times – but, for the people of God, it is prayer time! If ever there was a nation and a generation that needed to seek the Lord it is ours…and it is now.  I am especially excited about the 2020 Southwide Baptist Fellowship. This gathering is simply a time for preachers to hear preaching, encourage one another, and pray together. (View the full schedule of speakers now.) The theme this year is “And When They Had Prayed” from Acts 4:31. Like the early church, the situation today is critical but God is able. Throughout history when…

This is hard for me. The lives of so many faithful ministers have ministered to me through the years! Yet as I look at my shelves and consider the ones that have had the greatest impact on my life there are a few that stand out. Hudson Taylor and Maria by J.C. Pollock (We all know the story of the pioneer missionary Hudson Taylor, but do you know the story of his wife? Maria’s partnership with her husband allowed the China Inland Mission to reach China with the gospel. Read this book.) A Passion for Souls by Lyle W. Dorsett (There are hundreds of books written on the life and ministry of D.L. Moody but this volume has been one…

Sometimes God scatters His people. This is seen in the early church when believers were scattered because of persecution (Acts 8:4). But there is a huge difference between the scattering of persecution and the scattering of neglect. When God scatters a flock He does it to multiply and reproduce the flock in other places. If sin, fear, or the Devil scatters a flock it is always to divide and conquer. We may soon see scattering because of persecution in our land but we are already witnessing the scattering of neglect. It is time to regather the flock. Throughout both the Old and New Testaments God’s people are repeatedly referred to as sheep…prone to their own wanderings and the attack of…

Reading is not just for information! It can be a healthy habit and constructive distraction for busy people. While I spend much of my reading time in research and study I have learned that keeping some “light” reading nearby is good for me. My favorite books for pleasure reading are usually biographies or something on Presidential history. Here are a few books that I have been reading just for fun during my down times… Killing Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly (I have always enjoyed reading about Lincoln and that era of American history. This book is extremely interesting and I think the best of O’Reilly’s series.) Unbroken by Laura Hildebrand (This is a powerful book! Hildebrand records the dramatic story of…

As most of you know we are looking forward to taking a group of friends to the land of the Bible. We have a great group of folks planning to travel and study God’s Word with us. I am personally excited about being there with family and friends. The tour was scheduled for this year, November 30 – December 9, 2020. With the current travel restrictions in place and concerns around the world it is now necessary for us to reschedule the trip for next year. The new dates for our Journey through the Land of the Bible tour will be Monday, November 29 – Wednesday, December 8, 2021. This is the exact same time frame as our original trip…

There is increased interest right now in the subject of prophecy. The entertainment world is full of speculation about apocalyptic events and the “end of the world” seems to be on the minds of many. As believers we know that the eternal God is the Source of all truth – He alone knows the beginning and the end. More than 25% of the Bible is prophetic in nature and there has never been a generation that should be more interested in it than ours! In the final inspired prophetic book we are told, “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at…
