Enjoying the Journey
I love America. God has been gracious to our land and I thank the Lord for the privilege of being born in this country. Like so many of you, I am burdened about the spiritual condition of our country and praying that there will be real repentance and revival at this critical time.
The sad reality is that a whole generation of young people are growing up without ever hearing the spiritual foundation and true history of our nation. And it’s not just the children! Many older Americans are beginning to forget where we came from and how we got here.
Permit me to recommend a handful of books that every patriot should read…
The Constitution of the United States (Take the time to read each article and amendment. Daniel Webster wrote, “I regard it as the work of the purest patriots and wisest statesmen that ever existed, aided by the smiles of a benignant Providence…it almost appears a divine interposition in our behalf.” John Adams said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Christian people should be interested in our Constitution!)
One Nation Under God by David C. Gibbs, Jr (Dr. Gibbs has been a defender of religious liberty and a help to innumerable churches. This book volume is well documented and details ten things every Christian should know about the founding of America.)
The Bible in America by Steve Green (It was my privilege several years ago to hear Mr. Green, the President of Hobby Lobby, speak on the fabric of America and its relationship to the Bible. A few months ago I enjoyed an afternoon in the Museum of the Bible on the Washington Mall that Green and his family have constructed. It was fascinating and I recommend it to all who love God’s Word.)
Our Country’s Founders – A Book of Advice for Young People by William J. Bennett (This book gives the founders own words on a variety of important subjects, along with insightful commentary. It is full of helpful content.)
When A Nation Forgets God by Erwin W. Lutzer (Read everything you can by Lutzer! He is a student of both Scripture and history. This little book gives 7 lessons that we must learn from Nazi Germany. Lutzer has researched the Nazi’s relationship to churches extensively and has written widely on the subject. I recommend that every minister also read Hitler’s Cross.)
One more recommendation for good resources on America: Visit Awake America ministries. These friends are actively working on Capitol Hill to make a difference for Christ. I enjoy being part of their Capitol Connection meeting each year and they have developed beautiful volumes and practical tools that would be a help to any serious student of America.
Would you take a moment right now to pause and breathe a prayer for our country? We need God. May the Lord continue to have mercy on America!
