Enjoying the Journey

Permit me to share with you something personal that God has been doing in my own heart. Week after week I am introduced to speak in some public meeting as an “evangelist.” Am I? Are you?

In our world the term has become synonymous with one who travels extensively and preaches publicly. The evangelist is one whose great passion in the salvation of lost souls. This passion is not bound by geography or confined to a certain setting. It is the passion of his life.

I am currently helping to teach an online class for the Crown Graduate School and Seminary on “Teaching and Preaching the Bible.” The students were required recently to read one of D.L. Moody’s gospel messages. In it, the passion of the evangelist was revealed. Moody’s heart was not simply to reach the lost in public settings, but to do so in personal ones.

A true evangelist is an evangelist all the time. His heart is fixed on Christ and the desire to bring others to Him.

The biblical evangelist is an extension of the Evangel, Jesus Christ. Remember that He went about preaching the gospel everywhere He went! So should we.

Like me, you may preach in public meetings. Or you may be one of the majority of Christians who will never preach a sermon publicly. In either case, it is possible to be a personal evangelist. Wherever you are, whoever you meet, whatever your tasks, make it your business today to seek the salvation of some soul for whom Christ died.

Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:20)
