Pop Culture and Pop Christianity

By Scott Pauley | September 14, 2013 |

Pop culture has received a great deal of attention in recent years.  Television and the Internet gave it momentum and the proliferation of social media has only increased its influence.  Pop culture is the attitudes and ideas of “popular culture” expressed through music and current trends.  It is, in many respects, the enemy of God and God’s truth.  Popular culture is not new – it is Satan’s way of binding generations by convincing them to accept new norms that are far below God’s intent. Yet while we preach against the effects of pop culture, most believers and churches have been swept up into a wave of “pop Christianity.”  The lines are drawn in different places, but the principle is the…

The Power of a Personal Letter

By Scott Pauley | September 13, 2013 |

Recently I was sitting in my study at home when my oldest daughter came in and proudly announced, “Dad, I am about to write my first letter.”  She is thirteen.  How is that possible? Now, she has written cards, short notes, and plenty of text messages – but a letter? Letter writing has been all but lost in our generation.  While I am not opposed to messages of 140 characters or less, there is something deeply personal and powerful about a letter that cannot be conveyed in short bursts of communication. The Changing Seasons of Life

By Scott Pauley | September 7, 2013 |

Fall is my favorite time of the year.  At least in the fall!  I actually love all of the seasons and am blessed to live in a part of the country where there are four very distinct seasons.  The older I get, the more I enjoy the change of seasons.  It reminds me so much of life. New Beginnings

By Scott Pauley | August 16, 2013 |

Today we open the doors of Crown College for its 23rd year.  I remember well the day 19 years ago this week when I showed up at Crown College for the first time.  I remember those who showed me around.  I remember Pastor Sexton’s interest in every student.  I remember those I roomed with (some of them are very hard to forget!).  Most of all, I remember the spirit of anticipation and expectancy. Our campus is much larger now.  The buildings more extensive.  The student body and faculty have grown.  But some things never change.  That same spirit is evident this morning and we are believing that the best is yet to come!  Our God is at work and is…

The Power of History

By Scott Pauley | July 27, 2013 |

I live around history…and I love it.  Just outside my office at Crown College is a 30,000 square foot Christian Heritage Center.  For me, history is alive and exciting.  Yet with all of the access we have to historical information, it seems that the appreciation for it is sadly lacking in most young people. A few days ago we made our annual trek to my wife’s homeland in Michigan.  It is always a joy to see my in-laws ( I actually mean that!).  This year we visited the Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, just outside of Detroit.  I have never seen so much history in one place!  It is a fascinating tour and everyone from grandchildren to grandparents enjoyed it…
