Victory Over Temptation
We all want to live in victory over sin. The key to victory over sin is learning victory over temptation. “Resist small beginnings”, a wise man once said. Deal with the seed and you will not have to overcome a forest of sin’s consequences. Temptation is a fleshly assault by the enemy. He appeals to our lust, our pride – our flesh. It is impossible to combat fleshly temptation with the energy of the flesh. Pastor Sexton has often said that you must deal, not only with the devil, but the devil’s friends! He has a friend in me and in you. Flesh is complicit with the temptation because we desire to please ourselves! The only way to meet fleshly…

Today we open the doors of Crown College for its 23rd year. I remember well the day 19 years ago this week when I showed up at Crown College for the first time. I remember those who showed me around. I remember Pastor Sexton’s interest in every student. I remember those I roomed with (some of them are very hard to forget!). Most of all, I remember the spirit of anticipation and expectancy. An entry in the journal of Henry Martyn reads, “Let me be taught that the first great business on earth is the sanctification of my own soul.” George Muller said, “The first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day was to have my soul happy in the Lord.” The first realization of ministry must be that we do not have the needed resources apart from a daily, vital relationship with Jesus Christ. David Livingstone wrote, near the end of his life, of his relationship with the Lord: “He is the greatest master I…

It is often after victories that the greater defeat comes. We win. We rejoice. We let down our guard. The problem is that Satan never lets down his attack. Vigilance is in short supply today and more desperately needed than ever. Remember that it was after the Spirit descended on Christ at the baptism that the devil brought his most intense temptation. It was after the day of Pentecost that persecution arose. It was after David’s battlefield triumphs that he had a tragic failure. The Christian life is always present tense. There is no place to stop. A young man in Napoleon’s army was said to have given a valiant effort in battle. Others recommended him for promotion. The…
