Enjoying the Journey

From A Fellow Evangelist

I thank God for faithful evangelists. They are a gift to the local church (Ephesians 4:11), and properly used, a help to both pastor and people. It has been a joy at this stage in my life to learn more about evangelism both from personal experience and from the experiences of others.   Larry Clayton has been one of the Lord’s faithful evangelists for many years. He lives and labors to win the lost to Christ, start churches, and help stir God’s people. Some time ago he and his precious wife came to a gospel crusade where I was preaching. After one of the services we had a meal together and he was a great encouragement to me personally. Men…

Who Was Patrick?

Tomorrow people around the world will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with little thought of the man for which the day is named. In fact, much of what is associated with Patrick is based on falsehoods… Patrick was not Irish – he was Scottish. He was not a canonized “Saint” of the church, but he was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. His mission was not to rid Ireland of snakes, but rather to preach the gospel of Christ. And the thing he would want you to remember has nothing to do with the color green; he would want you to know that Jesus Christ can change your life. The first time Patrick was in Ireland was as a teenager.…

A Guest Post & Special Invitation

Bob Crichton and I had the joy of laboring together in the Lord’s work for many years. He has been a faithful friend and spiritual counselor to me. Brother Crichton is a Spirit-filled man who walks with God. He has studied for many years the life of D.L. Moody and is full of helpful insights for our own generation. I hope you enjoy his brief post and will plan to join us this summer for an personal look at the ministry of Evangelist D.L. Moody… For forty years it has been a great joy of my life to study the life of D. L. Moody. I have over one hundred biographies and books about his life. When you study his…

The Evangelists

Quote there is nothing wrong in this world that the Gospel cannot fix

Their names are some of the most famous in all of Christian history. Their writings comprise the first four books of our New Testament. Who are they? Evangelists. It is never recorded that any of them served as a pastor. Every ministers calling is unique and chosen for them by the Holy Spirit. The highest calling is the one that God chooses for your life. They all came from different backgrounds. There were Jews and Gentiles. One was a tax collector, one was a medical doctor, another a fisherman. What a wonderful illustration that God chooses and uses all types of people! The one thing they all had in common was Jesus… Each had their own heart changed by Christ.…

A Personal Evangelist

Permit me to share with you something personal that God has been doing in my own heart. Week after week I am introduced to speak in some public meeting as an “evangelist.” Am I? Are you? In our world the term has become synonymous with one who travels extensively and preaches publicly. The evangelist is one whose great passion in the salvation of lost souls. This passion is not bound by geography or confined to a certain setting. It is the passion of his life. I am currently helping to teach an online class for the Crown Graduate School and Seminary on “Teaching and Preaching the Bible.” The students were required recently to read one of D.L. Moody’s gospel messages.…

The Influence of Evangelist Billy Graham

Like so many days, I am flying through the Charlotte, North Carolina airport this morning. Four miles from the terminal a private memorial service is being held for the most famous preacher in the world. Billy Graham has preached the gospel to more people than any evangelist in history. While there are things that Graham said and did that I could not support, I am truly grateful for the way God used him to carry the message of Christ around the world. “Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice” (Philippians 1:18). Billy Graham stayed with one simple message. His consistent emphasis was the Lord Jesus Christ. He did not try to become a motivational speaker. He…

5 Prayers of the Evangelist

The service had just ended and an older woman whom I did not know came to speak to me. She told me that she prays for me and for my family every day. I cannot think of anything more encouraging than that! Then she asked the question that few people ever ask. It revealed a discernment about the Lord and prayer. “I don’t want to just pray general prayers. What can I pray about specifically?” Great question. Specific prayers get specific answers. I have a list of fellow evangelists who I try to pray for regularly. Yet I have found that it is far better to pray for a definite need than it is to simply call a name. As…

A Special Announcement Regarding Our Work

19 months ago God led us into full-time evangelistic work. We have seen His direction at each step on this journey. Some time ago the Lord began to stir in my heart a desire to have a younger man, a new evangelist, to travel with me in meetings. Divine confirmations have come repeatedly that this is truly God’s guidance. It is wonderful to have my family traveling with me in ministry. Tammy and the kids are such an important part of what God has called me to do – both at home and on the road. They will continue to travel with me regularly, but with school schedules and other responsibilities it is not possible for them to be with…

Free Resource: A Tool for You and Your Church

partner with us in prayer Icon

In January we began offering a free downloadable resource each month. (If you missed the first one, a 30 day prayer guide, you may access it here.) This month we offer our second tool for believers… Praying for the Preacher Many years ago my pastor taught me that I could have a part in helping all of those the preacher ministers to if I would labor with the preacher in prayer. God will multiply the fruit of your prayers in the lives of so many people! Prayer is the greatest work. “Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf”…
