The God Of The Thunder
You would have laughed at me. In fact, I laughed at myself. I was sitting on our front porch studying what the Bible has to say about thunder. Suddenly the largest crack of thunder I have ever heard in my life sounded right next to me! Before I was even conscious of what I was doing, I had dropped everything and was standing with both hands in the air looking around. It got my attention to say the least. We have had an inordinate amount of strong thunderstorms this year. They can be frightening and impressive at the same time. But there is more…they make us think about God. Scripture speaks frequently of thunder. There is a theology to thunder.…
Read MoreThursday’s Thought: “FOR THANKSGIVING DAY”
I must be getting more sentimental in my old age. Over the last few years I have developed a great love for poetry. In so many ways it expresses the deepest feelings of the soul. It is my conviction that this is why the Holy Spirit used poetry in the Word of God to articulate some of the deepest truths surrounding our relationship to God. Poetry is one of God’s beautiful messengers. In my office I keep some volumes of famous and favorite poems. This week I came across a poem that I had never read. It was written by one of the truly great Bible teachers of another generation, Dr. James M. Gray. As I read it for the…

Since I was a boy, growing up in the mountains of West Virginia, I have always loved the snow. There is something almost magical, intensely beautiful, about snow. This morning I am sitting in our dining room looking out on a fresh blanket of white. Large snowflakes are still falling. For folks in certain parts of the country perhaps it has grown a little wearisome by this time of winter. Weather stations are issuing constant alerts for winter storms. The alerts seem to either bring groans or that giddy, child-like feeling. It is true that “snow days” mean more to school children than to the rest of us, but I must confess that the little boy in me still gets…
Read MoreVictory Over Temptation
We all want to live in victory over sin. The key to victory over sin is learning victory over temptation. “Resist small beginnings”, a wise man once said. Deal with the seed and you will not have to overcome a forest of sin’s consequences. Temptation is a fleshly assault by the enemy. He appeals to our lust, our pride – our flesh. It is impossible to combat fleshly temptation with the energy of the flesh. Pastor Sexton has often said that you must deal, not only with the devil, but the devil’s friends! He has a friend in me and in you. Flesh is complicit with the temptation because we desire to please ourselves! The only way to meet fleshly…
Read MoreOne of Life’s Greatest Questions: Where Is God?
Life is full of questions. One of the first questions children ask about God is a question that continues into theological discussions of people of all ages. Ask a child, “Where is God?” and you will see them point up. Heaven! God is in Heaven. And so He is. Almighty God sits on the throne of the universe, ruling the good and overruling the evil. No matter how bad things may get we must never forget that God has not abdicated His throne. Ask a theologian, “Where is God?” and they will point all around. He is everywhere. The God of the Bible is omnipresent – everywhere at the same time. The Lord is not bound by geography, time, or…
