5 Books To Read For Fun
Reading is not just for information! It can be a healthy habit and constructive distraction for busy people. While I spend much of my reading time in research and study I have learned that keeping some “light” reading nearby is good for me. My favorite books for pleasure reading are usually biographies or something on Presidential history. Here are a few books that I have been reading just for fun during my down times… Killing Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly (I have always enjoyed reading about Lincoln and that era of American history. This book is extremely interesting and I think the best of O’Reilly’s series.) Unbroken by Laura Hildebrand (This is a powerful book! Hildebrand records the dramatic story of…
Read More5 Books to Read About America
I love America. God has been gracious to our land and I thank the Lord for the privilege of being born in this country. Like so many of you, I am burdened about the spiritual condition of our country and praying that there will be real repentance and revival at this critical time. The sad reality is that a whole generation of young people are growing up without ever hearing the spiritual foundation and true history of our nation. And it’s not just the children! Many older Americans are beginning to forget where we came from and how we got here. Permit me to recommend a handful of books that every patriot should read… The Constitution of the United States…
Read More5 Books To Read On Music
Let me begin by saying that I am not a musician! The books that I am recommending are not related to the technical aspects of music, but rather to the use of great songs and the stories behind them. I do love music and have a collection of hymn books in our home. However, I am afraid that very often we know the songs but little about the history of the songs or the people who wrote them. These five books have been a welcome addition to my library. I hope they will be an encouragement to you as they have been to me… Al Smith’s Treasury of Hymn Histories by Alfred B. Smith (Al Smith, “Mr. Singspiration,” was a…
Read MoreThe Danger of Erasing History
In 1948 Winston Churchill said to the House of Commons, “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Our own nation is in the midst of a revolution. An outright revolt against history. While not everything in our history is good, it is true. And only truth can guide us forward. The attack is not new. It is one of Satan’s greatest strategies: cause people to forget their past and you can affect their future. We have for many years seen a wave of “revisionist history” at work in our educational system. Rewrite what you don’t like. Now, it is even more pronounced. Erase it all. What is true on a national scale is also true on a…
Read MoreThe Power of History
I live around history…and I love it. Just outside my office at Crown College is a 30,000 square foot Christian Heritage Center. For me, history is alive and exciting. Yet with all of the access we have to historical information, it seems that the appreciation for it is sadly lacking in most young people. A few days ago we made our annual trek to my wife’s homeland in Michigan. It is always a joy to see my in-laws ( I actually mean that!). This year we visited the Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, just outside of Detroit. I have never seen so much history in one place! It is a fascinating tour and everyone from grandchildren to grandparents enjoyed it…
