“Nothing is more dreaded than the national government meddling with religion.” These were the words of President John Adams in 1812 and they express a truth that translates well into this generation in our nation. We are all concerned about the protection of religious liberty…or at least we should be. Adams, who knew something about the cost of fighting for independence, gave this advice: “Let the pulpit resound with the doctrine and sentiments of religious liberty.” This is not a political issue. It is a spiritual one, built upon the Biblical principle of soul liberty. The highlight story in a major magazine carried this title: “Living My Truth.” It was the story of a transgender airline pilot who proudly boasted that he was now living his own truth. My heart broke as I read the words of a man who had believed a lie but had convinced himself that he was living in truth. This is a mark of an apostate age – people have turned from revealed truth (Romans 1:18-25; Jude 4-10). When sin comes out blatantly and boldly it is not an expression of truth, it is evidence of rebellion. The fear of God is gone. The bad news and news of bad people seems to keep piling up. Like many of you I am sickened this week by the blatant rebellion in our country against what is true and good and decent. Our beloved nation is quickly moving toward the judgment of God. We need a spiritual awakening! One of the dangers for God’s people in our culture is allowing conservatism to distract us from Christ. Too much talk radio and political commentary clouds the mind and steals the heart. Be informed. Stay active. Vote righteously. But keep your eyes on Jesus!
