Pray For A Preacher

Tammy and I are spending the day with a great group of preachers and their wives at The Preacher’s Rest. I thank the Lord for calling me to be a preacher, and I thank Him for using faithful preachers in my life. It is a pleasure to invest in precious servants of the Lord over these few days. Ministers are real people with real needs. They live every day on an active battlefield, and the enemy hates what they are doing. The fight is on and we can have a part! “Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God…

A Brief Report On The Preacher’s Rest

Many of you have prayed for us this week as we conducted The Preacher’s Rest in Hickory, NC. The Tabernacle Baptist Church family worked hard to host friends from many places. They demonstrated the love and grace of God in a special way. Nearly one hundred fellow laborers – preachers and their wives – joined us for this first gathering. Most of all, the presence of the Lord was very evident. Our heart for this meeting was one thing: to minister to the inner man. Healthy ministries grow out of healthy souls. Every preacher who desires to learn more fully the Lord’s work must learn more deeply the Lord’s rest. What Is This Rest? It was a joy to study…

Three Weeks From Today!

Preacher’s are engaged in the greatest work in the world. It is a work that will outlive this world!  1 Timothy 5:17 says, “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.” Those who are engaged in such labor must also have times to rest and refresh their own souls. Friendship and fellowship is absolutely essential to keeping your own heart renewed. Even the great Apostle Paul rejoiced when he was given liberty to go to his friends and be refreshed (Acts 27:3). Three weeks from today we will be gathered with a group of preachers at The Preacher’s Rest in Hickory, North Carolina. This gathering is designed…

Just For Preachers

I love preachers. It was my privilege to grow up in a pastor’s home. For eighteen years I served under a faithful pastor. Now, it is my opportunity each week to spend a great deal of time with preachers across the country. One thing I know to be true: God’s men need times of refreshing and encouragement. The battle is fierce. Flesh is weak. Demands are great. And only the Lord can give strength to press on. Vance Havner was famous for saying, “If we don’t come apart we will come apart.” His comment was based on our Lord’s words to His own disciples in Mark 6:31, “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for…

A Guest Post And An Exciting Announcement

Pastor Scott Hooks is one of my dearest friends on earth. The work he has been chosen to lead in Hickory, NC is being blessed of the Lord in a wonderful way. In a personal way, God has used him in my life. I am pleased to share his guest post with you and to announce a new gathering for preachers that we look forward to co-hosting later this year. Enjoy the encouraging read and make plans to join us in September! After a long season of ministry that culminated with the sad news of the beheading of John the Baptist, the Lord Jesus spoke to His disciples saying, “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while” (Mark 6:31).…

Remembering Those Who Cannot Be Home for Christmas

One of the most famous Christmas songs of all time says, “I’ll be home for Christmas if only in my dreams.”  Bing Crosby made it popular but few people today know the background of the song.  The lyrics are written from the perspective of an American soldier stationed overseas during World War II, writing home to his family. Our Christmas tradition is to make the drive into the mountains of West Virginia at this time of year.  As I write this there is a light snow falling.  The house is full of the laughter of children.  (And I am full of mom’s home cooking!)  There is no place like home for Christmas. There are many people who cannot be home…
