A Mother’s Day Meditation: “The Law Of Thy Mother”
Proverbs opens with a father speaking to his son and closes with a mother speaking to her son. Children need the influence and instruction of both dad and mom. In the first chapter of this book of wisdom Solomon wrote, “My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother” (Proverbs 1:8). I am thinking today of many things that my father has instructed me in. But as we approach Mother’s Day I have returned again to this beautiful phrase, “the law of thy mother.” Mother’s have laws for sure! And they know how to enforce them. It all started in the mountain state so near to my own heart. Anna Jarvis began to send carnations to her local church in Grafton, West Virginia in honor of her mother. They were her mother’s favorite. Anna never had children of her own but she set something in motion for generations of children to come. Miss Jarvis enthusiastically lobbied for a holiday to honor mothers in the United States. “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.” 2 Timothy 1:5 To have a Timothy you need a Eunice. Long before the Apostle Paul influenced this young man the sincere faith of his mother was making its lasting impression. Long after Timothy had become an effective minister of the gospel it was the faith of Eunice that continued to serve as his example. I thank God for my Eunice.
