7 Truths My Dad Taught Me
Tonight I had the joy of sharing these thoughts with our church family. Perhaps they will be of some help to your family. My dad has been one of my greatest teachers. All fathers teach more than they realize, and more than their children realize until later in life. As a boy I enjoyed asking preachers to sign the flyleaf of my Bible and share their favorite verse. Occasionally I look back through those signatures with fond memories of many who taught me God’s truth. One day it dawned on me that I had never asked my own dad to sign my Bible. He was reluctant to do so but, when he did, he signed it differently than all of…

Two of God’s most blessed servants, one hundred years apart, practiced the same devotional habit. Both George Whitefield and George Mueller read the Bible each day on their knees. This was more than mere form. Their position represented an attitude of humility, reverence, and prayer. God’s revelation demands a response. Scripture should not be approached as a lecture; it should be engaged as a conversation. Martin Luther wrote, “To pray well is to study well.” Communion with the Author will open up the truth of the Bible as nothing else. When God speaks to us, it is most natural to speak to Him. If you read the chapter that corresponds with the day of the month you can easily stay on schedule and read through all 31 chapters in a month. A few weeks ago I began a new journey through this powerful book. I have read the chapters often and memorized many of the verses. But this trip through Solomon’s proverbs has been different. I have tried to personalize each verse. Nothing makes truth personal like prayer – taking it to heart and…

The wisest man who ever lived wrote, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). Death is mentioned first because it is what naturally comes out. Only the grace of God can enable us to speak life. Those of us that basically talk for a living are always in danger. I was recently reminded of yet another of Solomon’s proverbs, “In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin” (Proverbs 10:19). The more we speak, the more apt we are to say something that is hurtful to God, to others, and to ourselves. Perhaps one of the most cutting types of language is the use of sarcasm. Some of us have perfected it and assumed that…
