Enjoying the Journey

A Bible Teacher
Most Sunday mornings I am asked to address a combined Sunday School class or spend time with a particular Bible study group. This is always something I enjoy doing and is a little more informal than the preaching services. Recently I began a special meeting on a Sunday morning and the pastor asked if I would be willing to sit in a class with him. “You do not have to speak. I just want you to hear our teacher,” he said. It was one of the most refreshing and encouraging hours I have had in a long time. The Bible teacher had taken an online class with me long ago, but we had never met in person. As I sat…
Read MoreA Poem, A Principle, and A Prayer
When I was in college someone gave me a copy of an anonymous poem about the Bible as God’s revelation of Himself. Today we begin a new podcast series called “Journey Through the Scripture.” My prayer is that we all will come to know the written Word in a greater way, and through this journey, we will come to know the Living Word more personally. Bible study is not about knowing things; it is about knowing Christ. I thought you would like a copy of the poem for yourself. I hope it, and the daily studies, will be a blessing to you… I see my Lord in the Bible, Whenever I chance to look. He is the theme of the…
Read MoreA Fresh Start For Your Bible Reading
Just this week as I was reading God’s Word I noticed a reference that Jesus made to the reading of Scripture. In Luke 6:3 Christ spoke to religious people when He said, “Have ye not read so much as this…? Those who knew so much about God had failed to read some of the most basic portions of His Word! If they had read it, they had forgotten it. Or misunderstood it. Or failed to obey it. The point is: they needed to read it again! And so do we. All this week on our “Enjoying the Journey” podcast I am dealing with simple principles that will help us return to daily Bible reading. I do hope you will listen…

Pastor Kenny Kuykendall is being mightily used of the Lord in Lawrenceville, Georgia. It was my privilege to review his newest book on preaching. I know it will be a great help to all of us whose passion is to effectively preach God’s Word. We are happy to share these brief thoughts and recommend his new resource… Rare is the man who can preach with the eloquence of Spurgeon, the power of Moody, the conviction of Tozer, or the personality of Sunday. Most of us, in time, can come to terms with that reality. However, no man can preach, as far as the message itself, a better message than any other. For we all have access to the same grand…

Everybody loves a good story. Some preachers and teachers are known as story-tellers. This should never be our goal. Our mission is to be truth-tellers. However, learning to tell a story that reveals the truth – that is another matter entirely! THAT is teaching and preaching as Jesus did. Communicators in every field have come to understand the significance of stories. A few days ago I sat down on an American Airlines flight and picked up a copy of their monthly magazine. The editor’s comments were written under the title: “The Power of Story.” My wife came home recently with a book that someone had given her. It was a fictional work and not something that I typically would read,…

Do you have a favorite portion of Scripture? One of my Bible teachers used to say that his favorite passage of Scripture was the one he was studying at the time. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable…” (2 Timothy 3:16). Jesus said it this way, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Every word. We need it all. And yet at specific places along life’s path you will find that particular Scriptures take on special meaning. Some of those will stay with you for a lifetime. Philippians 3 is that chapter for me. When I was just a teenager God began…
Read MoreA Word for 2018
There is power in one word from God. I hold a personal conviction that the very words and every word of Scripture are given by inspiration of God. They have been preserved for us. Every word. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable…” (2 Timothy 3:16). “…It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word the proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). One word from God’s Word is so full of power and potential that if understood and applied it can change a person forever. Many words have been used by the Holy Spirit in this way in my life. From time to time God puts one word on…

Many of us have made definite commitments to give renewed attention to God’s Word in the new year. For me, that means something different every year. I try not to use the same reading schedule or plan. This keeps the routine from becoming a rut and helps me to approach it with fresh expectancy. I offer my plan for this year to you in the hope that some idea might encourage you in your own time in God’s Word… God led me to Psalm 119 for 2018. It is the longest psalm in the Bible. 174 of the 176 verses specifically reference the truth of God’s Word. And yet, I have discovered that this psalm seems to cover the gamut…

Dr. Frank Sells was one of my favorite Bible teachers. I can see him now, sitting on the platform, in his own conversational way showing some of the most powerful truths I have ever seen in the Word of God. Many of his statements were, as one author said, “velvet covered bricks.” They landed gently but made a huge impression on the life. In fact, I find myself quoting Dr. Sells almost every week. One of his famous statements was, “Truth is not found in the acceptance of one extreme or the other; often it is found in the acceptance of both.” One truth never cancels out another. Do we believe in the sovereignty of God or the free will…

This months resource is one of my favorites. In fact, it is my favorite book of the Bible! One of my instructors in college said that his favorite book of the Bible was the one he was reading at the time. Without doubt, all Scripture is wonderful. But many years ago I was challenged to adopt a “life book” and immerse myself in it. That book became the little New Testament letter of Philippians. I love this book for many reasons. Its theme is Jesus, and the joy that He alone can bring. It was the truth behind the name of our blog – Enjoying the Journey. It is the prayer of my life, that God would allow me to…
