A Simple Idea for Families
Families are busier than they have ever been. One of the most challenging things to do as a spouse or parent is consistently read the Bible with your family. I must confess that I feel I have failed in this area more often than I have succeeded. We have done better at certain seasons than at others, but I want to be more diligent in putting the Word of God into our hearts and home. Pastor Sexton instructed us that a Christian home has more to do with what you put into it than what you take out of it. In one of the classic passages on the family the Heavenly Father reminds us that a key element in home…
Read MoreA Deepening Conviction
Every conviction in our hearts should grow out of God’s Word. With the passage of time those convictions that are founded in eternal truth only deepen. The Holy Ghost confirms again and again that Bible convictions are true in every circumstance. Like God, His truth does not change. At this stage of life and ministry one of my Bible convictions that has grown stronger is my conviction about the Bible itself. As I watch the power of the gospel at work…As I witness the mysterious moving of God’s Word in the hearts of people in every place…As I see the transformative work of one verse of Scripture in my own soul…I am more convinced than ever – the Bible is…
Read More12 Minutes A Day
A Christian’s relationship with the Word of God does not end with Bible reading, but it does start there. The simple discipline of reading the Scriptures is a powerful resource in the daily walk of a believer. As I grow older my conviction in the power and sufficiency of God’s Word grows! This is indeed a miracle Book! Last week someone related to me the testimony of a very nonreligious man who began reading the Bible every day out of curiosity. In a short time the Holy Spirit had softened his heart, convicted him of his sin, and he was gloriously saved. The Koran cannot do this. The Book of Mormon has no such power. The writings of Confucius never…
Read MoreA Bible Lesson from an Eight Year Old
Road trips are fun. At least if you make them that way! This week I drove several hours to speak in a youth rally. Often I travel alone and have learned that quiet moments to reflect are helpful. As much as possible I try to take my family or some member of the family with me. It is not always as quiet, but it is definitely more memorable. Grant, our eight year old, went with me on this particular trip. The 24 hour trip was a very special time for the two of us. He picked all the meals and basically set the agenda for conversation. At some point during our drive he decided that we would play Bible trivia.…
Read MoreThe Greatest Method of Bible Study
Weeks ago I received a message late one evening from a fine teenager in our youth group. This young lady has been a great encouragement to me and my wife. She is growing in the Lord and serious about knowing Him better. Her message was to the point: “I have been reading the Bible but I don’t know how to study it. Can you help?” My mind flooded with ideas and suggestions – all helpful things. We have an entire college class at Crown College on “Methods of Bible Study!” But how could all of that be conveyed to a senior in high school in a brief period of time? Could it be that the greatest method of Bible study…
