Stirrings In The City
This week I am preaching at the historic Sixth Avenue Bible Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY. This beautiful 150-year old church is the continuing fruit of a faithful man. Robert Lowry is now famous for the many hymns that he wrote. Great songs like “Christ Arose” and “Nothing But The Blood Of Jesus” came from his pen. But Lowry himself said that he would rather preach the gospel than write a hymn. He did both well. While pastoring in Brooklyn he helped to begin the Flatbush Mission – another gospel preaching station – which would later become the Sixth Avenue Baptist Church. Just across the East River in lower Manhattan stands the Bowery Mission. It was there that for many…
Read MoreI Need Your Prayers
Today I leave for a 10 day preaching trip. The Lord is helping us and we are seeing His hand. At the same time there is always spiritual warfare because everything God ordains, Satan opposes! The “great door” and the “many adversaries” always go together (1 Corinthians 16:9). I know that I need the Lord as never before. And I need your prayers. Between revival meetings in Colorado and Georgia it is my privilege to preach the gospel at the God Bless America Rally in Canton, Ohio, on May 1-4. My friend Byron Foxx and I have been humbled to see the fervent prayers and diligent labor of God’s people from 16 sponsoring churches. The Lord is stirring some things…
Read MorePraying For Those Who Need To Come Home This Christmas!
In our last article I wrote about the geographical and circumstantial reasons that some loved ones cannot be home for Christmas. But there is another reason. Some people may even be around our tables and under our roof, but they are still away from home. Spiritually they are wandering from the Lord and His people. The greatest distance is the distance between a wayward soul and God. The greatest separation is the separation of sin. At this time of year we should all be praying that God will bring prodigals home to Himself. If you have a loved one that you are praying for we would love to help you pray. Over the next few weeks in our home we…
Read MoreA Personal Evangelist
Permit me to share with you something personal that God has been doing in my own heart. Week after week I am introduced to speak in some public meeting as an “evangelist.” Am I? Are you? In our world the term has become synonymous with one who travels extensively and preaches publicly. The evangelist is one whose great passion in the salvation of lost souls. This passion is not bound by geography or confined to a certain setting. It is the passion of his life. I am currently helping to teach an online class for the Crown Graduate School and Seminary on “Teaching and Preaching the Bible.” The students were required recently to read one of D.L. Moody’s gospel messages.…
Read MoreDon’t Forget These Things On Your Christmas List!
Everyone is busy this week. Shopping. Eating. Cooking. Eating. Traveling. Eating. Wrapping. Eating. It is easy to forget the things that truly matter in the hurry and haste. Perhaps you are working feverishly from a Christmas list. Would you add these things to your list this year? Don’t forget Christ. Remember it is His birth we are celebrating! Spend some quiet time communing with Him each day. Set aside moments for the Word and prayer. Tell Him you love Him and show Him by what you do with your time. Don’t forget your family. Is that possible at Christmas? Certainly. We can be so distracted doing things for them that we forget to be with them. Be present. Talk. Laugh.…
Read MoreA Family and Ministry Update
As I write these words Tammy and the kids are with me for a conference with young adults in Florida. It has been such a joy to have my entire family traveling with me this month. The Lord has been gracious to allow us to spend some very special days together and to see the Lord work in wonderful ways. Yesterday was sweet as we celebrated Father’s Day “on the road.” I love to see Christ at work in and through our children. The Apostle John said it best when he wrote, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth” (3 John 4). Thank you for praying for our family. The summer is full…
Read MoreSome Thoughts On Our Recent Campaign
It is a joy to be home for a couple of days after a busy season of meetings. Just a few days ago we conducted a Go Reach America Campaign in the Tri-Cities region. The Lord blessed in a wonderful way and we give Him the glory for it! As I have had some time to reflect I wanted to share a few things the Lord did in my own life. He always works on both ends – saving souls and teaching us! Here are a few of the truths the Holy Spirit has impressed on my heart… It is a privilege to labor with others for souls. Ecclesiastes 4:9 says, “Two are better than one; because they have a…
Read MoreThe Rising Death Toll
I enjoy laughter and love life. I wish that every thought could be a happy one. But that is not the world in which we live. Ours is a day of spiritual warfare. It seems the attack is stronger than ever and the casualties are great. War is a terrible thing. Death is inevitable. In World War I over 16 million people were killed. More than 75 million in World War II. 1.2 million in the Korean Conflict. 3.8 million in Vietnam. The death toll continues in the modern War on Terror. We read the statistics, but it is the realization of one truth that is most staggering: every number was an eternal soul. Stand at the Vietnam Memorial and…
