Life’s Delays
Delayed. One of the most dreaded words in air travel. It glares in yellow letters from the airport monitors. The very word sounds like what it represents – a long indefinite period. Few updates bring more downcast looks. Frustration rises. Immediately the questions begin to come…Why? How long? Is the new time accurate or just hopeful? What can we do differently? Will I make my connection or appointment? Whose fault is this anyway? Where can I get another cup of coffee while I worry? Pace if you want to. Fret if you will. Look for someone to blame. I am nearing the end of another journal and, God willing, will begin another soon. This is always a reminder to me of the passing of life and the importance of making every day count. In this particular journal I have some thoughts written in the front and back flyleaf. In the front I have two Scriptures that have been a great help to me. One is a promise for every place where the Lord may take me: “And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them” (John 10:4). Meyer observed that everything is God’s classroom and serves to teach me something. Sitting in a hotel room recently I began to make a list of some of the truths the Lord is patiently teaching me. God is the same everywhere. The omnipresent God is not bound by geography. I am never alone. I never check into a hotel alone or board a plane by myself. Someone said to me not long ago, “You must really love to travel!” Anyone who has spent much time on the road will tell you that the initial thrill and adventure wears off fairly quickly. Something else has to keep you going. Life itself is a journey – full of goodbyes, unexpected circumstances, and change. These realities can be both frustrating and sad. Late last night I returned from meetings in Georgia and Tennessee. Soon I will leave for another appointment in Ohio. It is a way of life in itinerant evangelism. A friend said to me this week, “You must really love to travel!” Not always. I love the Lord. I love preaching His Word. I love fulfilling the call of God upon my life. I love being with pastors and local churches. I love seeing people come to Jesus Christ. I love witnessing the work of the Holy Spirit. …but, I don’t always love travel. We are in the midst of planning our annual family vacation. Some of my fondest childhood memories surround family trips. There is a certain adventure to it all! My wife and children love to travel and it has made for wonderful times together. Sometimes the road trip is as much fun as the destination! Several years ago I began writing on this blog.
