Life’s Delays
Delayed. One of the most dreaded words in air travel. It glares in yellow letters from the airport monitors. The very word sounds like what it represents – a long indefinite period. Few updates bring more downcast looks. Frustration rises. Immediately the questions begin to come…Why? How long? Is the new time accurate or just hopeful? What can we do differently? Will I make my connection or appointment? Whose fault is this anyway? Where can I get another cup of coffee while I worry? Pace if you want to. Fret if you will. Look for someone to blame. Join the ranks of those who are fussing about the inconvenience. But in the end we all just have to sit down…
Read MoreQuestions You Can’t Answer
Why did Jesus wait until He was 30 years of age to begin His ministry when He was so full of wisdom at the age of 12? Why did the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus only last three and a half years when He could have lived a long, full life? Why in those three and a half years did He not go everywhere, heal everyone, do everything He could have done? There are many things we do not know and some things we cannot answer. One thing is sure. At the end of His short life He said to His Father, “I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do” (John 17:4). So often sincere believers…
Read MoreAre You In A Holding Pattern?
There are few things more frustrating than the pilot’s announcement that your flight is in a holding pattern! How long? Why? What is the problem? When will this end? In recent days I have counseled with a number of people whose lives and ministries seem to be in such a holding pattern. What is God doing? When will this be done? Why did this happen? The questions come frequently in such times…but the answers do not come as easily. I lived through a season like this in my own life. There was no green light or red light. More of a caution. Wait. Go slow. Watch. Listen. It was in this period of time that the Lord taught me some…
Read MoreA Word of Encouragement for Single Adults
For a time in our ministry Tammy and I had the privilege of working in the single adult department of our church. We had watched many of these young adults come through our youth ministry and it was a joy to see them continuing to grow in Christ. One Sunday a fine young lady was giving a very personal testimony of the Lord’s work in her life. As she spoke I saw more clearly than ever that all of the counsel we have given to single adults comes down to one thing. Life is not about marrying the right person, admission into a certain college, or choosing a career path. No, thank God, it is much simpler than that! Yes,…
Read MoreRight On Time
We live in time. 60 minutes an hour. 24 hours a day. 7 days a week. 52 weeks a year. For as many years as God chooses to grant us. But our God is not bound by time. He is eternal and time is in Him. Often time seems to move slowly, especially when we are living in the middle of uncomfortable circumstances. It is then that we must remember that God is a God of perfect timing. Rudyard Kipling, describing the key questions of investigation, penned, I keep six honest serving men (They taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When, And How and Where and Who. While I have asked all of these…
